World Cup '74 Portrait #21 (Enrique Chazarreta: Argentina)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Picking up the threads again of the ‘hauntological’ drawing project, the portrait subject today is Enrique Chazarreta, who featured in both the FKS & Panini ‘World Cup ‘74’ collectors’ sticker albums, was selected as a member of the official Argentina squad for the Finals (subsequently making one brief substitute appearance in the tournament), & has already been represented here at TOoT in the ‘pixellated’ form of the original 1974 World Cup drawing project that began around 18 months ago & continued until about this time last year before being abandoned.

Badge of the Day #96 (Wrexham AFC, 1977-78)

Coming very much closer to home than the predominantly continental aspect of the whole, this latest addition to the collection is an object of a very specific & special, fine vintage (& it certainly appears ‘vintage’, displaying  the patina of its age), commemorating as it does the glorious achievement of Wrexham’s winning of the good old Third Division championship all those many years ago in 1978, thrilling to behold as the season that unfolded before our eyes was to those of us who were there, thus imbuing the badge with a particular hauntological frisson, granting instantly ‘memorable’ access to then, an historical highpoint, from now.

World Cup '74 Portrait #20 (Reinhardt Lauck: East Germany)

Today the opposite of tomato is the coast of Nebraska

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour/30x21cm

This latest randomly-chosen portrait subject is Reinhard(t) Lauck, who was represented in both the FKS & Panini 1974 World Cup commemorative sticker albums & selected for the official East Germany squad for their first &, alas it transpired, only Finals, where he went on to play, apparently with distinction, in the historic 1 – 0 victory in the first-ever ‘political derby’ against West Germany, & the two subsequent matches, in the Second Round group stage, defeats to Brazil (0 - 1) & then Holland (0 – 2), when he was substituted, in the 64th minute of both.

Having died young, in 1997, Lauck is one of a particular kind of ‘ghost’ of World Cup ’74 that inhabits this drawing project, intensified in this instance by the cessation-to-be of the very state he represented, even if it &/or its sporting institutions has far from disappeared from consciousness or memory, of course.

Badge of the Day #95 (RWD Molenbeek #3)

Presenting today a new addition in the form of the third badge now in the collection to represent our beloved-from-the-Seventies RWD Molenbeek, this being an object obviously of a certain vintage, which of course imbues it with that particular ‘hauntological’ irresistible desirability.

The design of the emblem upon is something of a riff on the club’s official one, with the black & red squares to the left of the black & white stripes, & the red circled white star inset within all present & correct, then topped with the RWDM initials set in green, which ‘header’ diverts from the norm yet adds an attractive zing of colour. Note also how the ‘RD’ & ‘WM’ are set within their own individual cells within the overall grid structure, all of which adds to the sense of the logo being something like a miniaturized painting, especially with the ‘handmade’ wonkiness of the lettering & star shape, something in the manner of Jasper JohnsFlag & alphabets, for a couple of fine examples - one can just imagine it enlarged to a grander scale, striking composition & image that is undoubtedly is.

World Cup '74 Portrait #19 (Francesco Morini: Italy)

Following hot on the heels of a recently-drawn pair of his teammates is a randomly-chosen fourth member already of the Italian squad, Francesco Morini, who featured in both the FKS & Panini ‘World Cup ‘74’ sticker albums &, subsequently, for Italy in all three of their matches at the 1974 World Cup Finals, being substituted after 66 minutes of the second, a 1 – 1 draw with Argentina.

World Cup '74 Portrait #18 (Giorgio Chinaglia: Italy)

This most recent portrait subject in the ‘hauntological’ drawing project features Giorgio Chinaglia of Italy, as chosen to be represented in the form of a sticker in the FKS ‘Wonderful World of Soccer Stars World Cup 1974 collectors’ album, from which source image-object the drawing, via the ‘transitional’ image of an enlarged photocopy (somewhat degraded in quality), was subsequently processed.
Chinaglia also appeared in the Panini-published ’München 74’ commemorative album & was selected for inclusion in the official 22-man Italian squad for the Finals, where he appeared in Italy’s first First Round group match against Haiti, being substituted after 70 minutes by Pietro Anastasi who scored final goal of 3 – 1 win (Haiti’s 1, scored by Emmanuel Sanon, being by far the most memorable event of the game, given that it was the first goal conceded by the Italians & their goalkeeper Dino Zoff in over 1,000 minutes’ playing time), & then their third (a 1 – 2 defeat to Poland which resulted in Italy’s early elimination from the tournament), during which he was replaced at half-time. In common with the great majority of the players involved in the 1974 World Cup – the televised coverage of which provided my first real exposure to football – Chinaglia’s was not a name that registered at the time, but subsequently it/he came to notice as one of the stars of the mid-70’s NASL, with New York Cosmos, regularly featuring in the pages of Shoot! magazine, one recalls.
Passing away in 2012, Giorgio Chinaglia is another of those from the ’74 World Cup no longer with us, although the ‘ghostly’ images remain.

World Cup '74 Portrait #17 (Jovan Acimovic: Yugoslavia)

Today the opposite of tomato is 'A Song From Under the Floorboards'

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

The latest portrait subject in the drawing project, from a randomly-generated original source image (to replicate the experience of the sticker-collecting itself), is Jovan Aćimović, who was represented in both the FKS & Panini ‘World Cup ‘74’ sticker albums, & went on to be selected for the official Yugoslavia squad for the tournament, where he played the entirety of all 6 of his country’s first & second round group matches, although this fact passed my young self by at the time & remained unknown until now, rendering Aćimović another of the great majority of the Finals’ ‘ghosts’, for all his active participation, hauntologically preserved within the pages of the stamp album &, subsequently, via the ‘re-mediated’ drawing process.

World Cup '74 Portrait #16 (Kakoko Etepe: Zaire)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Today’s randomly-generated portrait subject from 40 years ago is Kakoko Etepé, who was selected to appear as a representative of Zaire in both the FKS & Panini sticker albums previewing the then-upcoming 1974 World Cup (the former providing the source image-object from which an enlarged monochrome photocopy is made to provide the immediate visual reference for the drawing process), & also his country’s official squad for the tournament.
Subsequently, he appeared twice at the finals, in Zaire’s opening 0 – 2 defeat to Scotland & then for the first half of the record-equalling 0 – 9 loss to Yugoslavia, by the end of which the Zaireans were already 6 goals down.

World Cup '74 Portrait #15 (Don Ford: Scotland)

graphite & putty eraser/30x21cm

The most recent portrait subject to be drawn from the hat (or tin) proved to be Don Ford, a sticker of whom appeared, as a member of the selection representing Scotland, in the FKS ‘Wonderful World of Soccer Stars World Cup 1974 collectors’ album (which image-object serves as the original source for the drawing, processed with immediate visual reference to an enlarged, degraded image-quality monochrome photocopy of), & who was subsequently chosen for the official 22-man Scottish squad for the finals, although he went on to play no part in any of the Scots’ three matches the tournament itself, thus inevitably being another of the ‘unknowns’ to me of those participating (or not) in the ’74 World Cup, the original sticker/album & subsequent 're-mediated' drawing thus serving as hauntological preservative.

World Cup '74 Portrait #14 (Paolini Pulici: Italy)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

(Re)presenting the latest randomly-generated portrait subject in the form of ‘Paolini’ (rather Paolo/’Paolino’) Pulici, who was selected to appear as such in the FKS ‘Wonderful World of Soccer Stars World Cup 1974’ collectors’ stamp album (the drawing being processed, in the usual manner of this project, with immediate visual reference to an enlarged monochrome photocopy, of somewhat dubious image quality, of the original image-object of the sticker of the player concerned) & the official Italy squad for the tournament, although subsequently he played not a minute of the Italians’ matches in the finals, as also proved to be the case in the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, a curious & unfortunate statistic indeed.
