World Cup '74 Portrait #213 (Mayanga Maku: Zaire)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Another drawing in the project, the portrait subject of this one being Mayanga Maku, who was one of the elite selection to be featured representing Zaire in both the FKS & Panini World Cup ’74 sticker albums (the latter being of only 6 players), subsequently being chosen for his nation’s official squad for the Finals, where he appeared in all 3 of the Zairean’s matches, substituted against Scotland, as a half-time replacement in the 0 – 9 defeat to Yugoslavia, & finally for the whole game against Brazil.

World Cup '74 Portrait #210 (Ally Hunter: Scotland)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

This most recent drawing to be completed in the Project features a re-mediation of an image of Ally Hunter, who was represented in both the FKS & Panini World Cup ’74 commemorative sticker albums (the former providing our original source material in this instance) yet not subsequently selected for the official Scotland squad for the tournament.

Although not featuring at the World Cup, Ally Hunter’s is a name with which I became familiar soon after, as I recall him being a Scottish football columnist in ‘Shoot!’, which I began reading on a weekly basis soon into the following 1974-75 season (alternating with John Greig, who was his ‘Old Firm’ counterpart).

Research reveals that Hunter played only four matches for Scotland, all prior to 1974, & also that, in common with the Holland squad, as remarked upon previously, the Scottish World Cup selection’s 3 goalkeepers were quite astonishingly inexperienced at international level, having gained only 9 caps between them, & David Harvey, the number one, had earned 7 of those.

World Cup '74 Portrait #161 (Leivinha: Brazil)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Capitalizing on the opportunity for a pleasant early morning’s drawing activity today, with the result being the continuation of the Project & a study of an image of Leivinha, who was another to be represented in both the FKS & Panini sticker albums previewing & commemorating the 1974 World Cup, by which medium & ‘hauntological’ relics he has latterly emerged into consciousness, otherwise being, at the time, one of the great majority of players whose name & presence failed to register during one’s experience of the televised coverage of the tournament.
Subsequently selected as a member of the official Brazil squad, Leivinha went to play in all 3 of the Brazilians’ First Round group matches, being substituted after 65 minutes of the second, against Scotland, & again, after only 10 minutes (one can only surmise because of injury), in that phase’s concluding fixture, the eventual 3 – 0 victory over Zaire that saw Brazil scrape through by a single goal’s better difference over the unbeaten Scots: at the time of striker Leivinha’s departure from active service, Brazil collectively had failed to score at the ’74 World Cup (& would end in fourth place with only 6 goals in a total of 7 matches).

World Cup '74 Portrait #152 (Denis Law: Scotland)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Continuing the drawing project, the portrait subject today is Denis Law who, after been represented in both the FKS & Panini World Cup ’74 preview/commemorative sticker albums, was selected for the official Scotland squad for the tournament & subsequently the Scots’ first match of it, the 2 – 0 victory over Zaire, which proved to be his last appearance for his country & almost of his professional career.

As with the majority of the Scottish team(s) who featured at the ’74 World Cup, Law’s is probably a name that registered at the time of exposure to the televised coverage of the tournament, although subsequent awareness of the historical significance of the player’s career as one became a keen student of the game might have blurred such recollections.

World Cup '74 Portrait #105 (Edu: Brazil)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Today’s subject is Edu, previously unknown to me until encountering the sticker representing the player in the FKS ‘Wonderful World of Soccer Stars World Cup 1974’ collectors’ album, who was selected as a member of the Brazil squad for the Finals, during which he appeared once, in the concluding First Round group match, the 3 – 0 win against Zaire with which the Brazilians just pipped Scotland to a place in the second phase.

World Cup '74 Portrait #91 (Ivica Surjak: Yugoslavia)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Our latest subject is Ivica Surjak, strikingly-coiffed in the Seventies’ manner, a sticker of whom was included amongst the selection of Yugoslavian players represented in the Panini ’München 74’ collectors’ album & who was chosen for his nation’s official squad for the World Cup, where he went on to appear – ‘memorably’, for the name of Surjak is one of the relatively few I can recall from exposure to the television coverage of the tournament, where Yugoslavia would have enjoyed a higher profile than some teams by dint of being drawn in the same First Round group as the sole British representatives Scotland – in each of their six matches, scoring twice, in the 9 - 0 rout of Zaire & then the final second phase group fixture, a 1 – 2 loss to Sweden.

World Cup '74 Portrait #76 (Joe Jordan: Scotland)

graphite & putty eraser/30x21cm

Today’s rogue in the portrait gallery is, regrettably, the ever-unforgivable (for his cheating hand, literally, in Wales’ elimination from the 1978 World Cup qualifiers)  ‘Volleyball’ Joe Jordan, who was selected for inclusion in both the FKS & Panini ‘World Cup ‘74’ sticker albums, the Scotland squad for the Finals &, subsequently, each of the Scots’ three matches in the tournament, when he scored two of their three goals that ultimately proved insufficient for further progress despite remaining undefeated.
