World Cup '74 Portrait #16 (Kakoko Etepe: Zaire)

graphite & putty eraser, with watercolour pencil/30x21cm

Today’s randomly-generated portrait subject from 40 years ago is Kakoko Etepé, who was selected to appear as a representative of Zaire in both the FKS & Panini sticker albums previewing the then-upcoming 1974 World Cup (the former providing the source image-object from which an enlarged monochrome photocopy is made to provide the immediate visual reference for the drawing process), & also his country’s official squad for the tournament.
Subsequently, he appeared twice at the finals, in Zaire’s opening 0 – 2 defeat to Scotland & then for the first half of the record-equalling 0 – 9 loss to Yugoslavia, by the end of which the Zaireans were already 6 goals down.
